Wax melts are scented pieces of wax. Unlike a candle, a wax melt has no wick so needs to be melted in a burner. As the wax melts, it fills the area with its scent.
Wax melts are typically made from one of three types of wax; soy, paraffin or bees.
While a soy plant is a natural product, soy wax is not and requires a lot of processing. Similarly, paraffin wax is processed from petroleum, coal or oil shale. Both soy and paraffin wax when burned will release soot into the air.
Beeswax on the other hand is a natural product, has an almost indefinite shelf life, and when burned is not only soot free but also helps to remove pollutants and bacteria from the air. uMeltz only uses beeswax in its wax melts.
A chunk of beeswax
A drop of coconut oil (to give our melts a nice sheen)
A splash of fragrance
A lot of love
As wax melts have no wick, they need to be melted in a burner. These will heat the wax melt from below with either a candle or an electric element. uMeltz has a range of hand-finished ceramic 'tea light' burners available to buy.
Once lit, how long a wax melt will last and how much scent it will throw will depend on the quality of the melt. All uMeltz melts are made from quality ingredients and are infused with a high concentration of fragrance (10%). This means that each uMeltz beeswax melt will last many hours, and can be reused several times until the fragrance has been dispersed.
If you find that the scent is too strong for you, simply break the beeswax melt into smaller chunks - we won't take offence...
When you've finished with the melt, allow it to cool and harden in the burner. Once hard, scrape the wax out of the burner and dispose of it - uMeltz beeswax melts are biodegradable. Alternatively, you can return your used melts to us at one of our market stalls and we'll then recycle it.
There's no evidence that melting wax melts has any adverse health effects. Filling your home with your favourite scents will certainly uplift your mood, and there's even some research to suggest that the melting of beeswax can help to remove pollutants and bacteria from the surrounding air.
When using uMeltz melts, please remember to:
